The world Celebrates the new year today and back here in India amidst the parties and all the fun, a single soul (me) is contemplating upon the year that passed by. What is it about the new years eve, that so many people spend millions of dollars for parties and travel? Of course for countries like USA & UK, this is the only time of the year when everyone gets to take a break from their jobs and head back home to spend time with friends and family. So definitely it’s a time to celebrate gala style. Christmas being their only holiday season, they squander away all those savings for gifts and parties and enjoy one full fortnight of festivities.
But here in India, we’ve got handfuls of festivals and holidays. With all these festivities and public holidays, I find it amazing that we get enough time and resources to spend on yet another party… hehe…
Let’s analyze the last year that was:
31 January – Muharram (Islamic New Year)
14 March – Sikh New Year’s Day (Nanakshahi calendar)
11 April – Jain New Year (Mahavir Jayanti)
14 April – Tamil New Year (Tamil Nadu)
20 August – Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi)
22 October – Diwali (Deepawali) New year
It’s just amazing to find that 6 times in a year, we greet our friends/neighbors/relatives “Happy New Year”. And yet that is not enough, so we ape towards the western society to celebrate yet another new year on 1st January. Why this madness? Well my conjecture would be that we Indian’s love festivals (or rather the holidays that come along with them). All I can say is that the best way to celebrate new year is here in India. It doesn’t matter if you missed out on one new year party, one can always look forward to having a blast at the next one only a few months away.

To cut the story short – If you missed out a great party on 31st December eve, don’t fret. There are many new years to come by in 2007. Happy new years to all!!
