When it comes to guys and gadgets, there is no looking back. I’m sure all you guys reading this will agree. My good ‘ol Nokia N70 has started to die on me; as evident by dropped calls, poor call quality and poor GSM reception - some of the issues can be attributed to the age of the phone ( it turned 2 in June 2008) and the lack of 850 mhtz band in the GSM radio. At&T (Cingular) USA operates under 2 bands - 850 Mhtz and 1900 Mhtz. While my phone supports the 1900 band, the 850 band seems to kick into action when signal reception is poor. This is where my phone fails on me and I’m on the lookout for a new phone.
So now it came down to 3 choices (well actually only 2 - read on). The iPhone, Nokia N95 and Nokia N82. I’m not a big fan of the iPhone because of many factors: I’m not a big fan of touch screens, the whole overpriced apple product image, lack of physical keyboard, compulsory data plan, a very closed ecosystem, etc. The list can go on…. Did I forget to mention that I’m not eligible for the discounted $199 price. Anyhow, if I did my math correctly, I’d have ended up paying $720 more in terms of data plan charges over a period of 2 years.
This leaves the Nokia N95 and N82. The N95 (more specifically the N95-4 8GB phone) is the current flagship phone from nokia and does everything under the roof (well, except for giving me a BJ - but I can live with that). I don’t even know where to start with the phone. It’s got everything. The only thing I did not like was the fugly shape - I am looking for something aesthetically pleaseing like the N96 (still not released in USA and it would probably cost $800 or above). I don’t mind carrying a brick in my pocket as long as it looks beautiful.
The N82 looks nice, has a candy bar form factor, the xenon flash is a definite plus and I have the added advantage of revving the memory capacity upto to 32 GB (microSDHC cards). The processors speeds, RAM, GPS features are the same. In the end what sold me were the camera features of the N82. The image processing algorithm of the N82 is far superior that the N95. The GPS gets a faster cold fix (because of the improved re-positioning of the GPS chip at the top of the handset)… The N82 does not support US 3G standards but I’m not a big fan of computing on the go (at least I’ve still not reached that level of being busy)… blah blah blah
Long story cut short - I’m probably buying the Nokia N82 today evening from newegg. They have the cheapest price range available and I’m hoping for a delivery on 08/08/08.
I will post a detailed side by side comparison b/w the phones very soon (if I get the time)

Unfortunately my GF talked me down on the whole deal. I’m not going for the new phone anymore (atleast for the time being). Maybe next month. Keep a look out.

hmmm, people think throwing around words like “candy bar form factor”, “The image processing algorithm” is smart. How about an explanation of the image processing algorithm involved? Maybe that would impress someone

@TechieGirl
I’m sorry if you did not understand what I meant. I try to be as simple when writing blog posts without going into details about tech stuff. If you want to know more about image processing algorithms , then visit some wiki pages.
FYI the specs of both the cams are the same - 5 MP, carl zeiss lens, same focal length, etc. When you take a closer look at the images taken from both the cams in daylight(because N82 outshines in night shots), the N82 pictures have more true life colors and less distortion (or fuzziness) of shapes. This is because the engineers at nokia tweaked the camera software (on N82) for better processing of data. Of course, none could beat the details captured by a stand alone 5 MP camera because they (the phones) compress the images too much for details to be maintained. I hope this gives you sufficient information.
Anyway, I’m playing the wait and watch game right now. Will probably buy the Nokia 5800 (aka Tube) when it comes out early next year.

Oh my dear conceited man, i’m implying ignorance on your side, not mine. I design these algorithms in the first place.

I’m glad to know that and wish you good luck with your job.
I don’t say that I know everything. Technology is not my career, it is my interest. I do read articles/review online, try to infer and post my 2 cents about it online. I’m sorry if you did not like my style of writing but I cannot change what I write. Evey one has an opinion and clearly you are opinionated against me. I can’t change that - so I’ll live with that.
