Just upgraded to gallery 2.3 and found that the process was fairly simple. I’ve been putting up with the upgrade for very long because of past issue with upgrading – broken modules, invalid file paths and having to make complete restores.

The folks behind gallery came up with an much needed “English-Only” version eliminating the need to upload an additional 6-10 MB of language files. On the flipside, this meant that some of the older files on my installation folder were dispensable. The installer was good enough to tell me that I had over 2600 files which were not required from this upgrade (unless I’m using multi-language modules) and gave me a shell script to remove all of them.

Unfortunately, I do not have shell access to my server (need $10 per month – I think). So the next best thing was to run a cron job. I don’t know what went wrong but the dron job gave errors “cannot find file/folder” even after I had placed them in the correct folder. My obsessive behavior took over and I went in maunally to delete all those 2600+ files..  Took me about an hour but I was finally done..

The upgrade went smoothly after that with a slight hitch while upgrading the ffmpg module (I’m pretty sure it was due to the older install by my hosting provider but I’m not complaining. Matt @ MJZ is the best hosting provider money could buy).  Spent a few minutes fiddling with the settings of diff modules – activating/deactivating/uninstalling, etc and the gallery is live once again.

On a side note, I was at the Independence Arts Studio – taking some pictures of students getting involved with disabled community members for a little painting event. All part of my new part-time job as the web develper for the college of health professions at Temple University. You’d be amazed at the quality of work that was done over there… unfortunately, I cannot upload pictures here because of an agrement I had to sign. The pictures will be uploaded to the IAS website very soon.

Barbara, the studio director, was a very pleasent lady and forthcoming with information about the organization. She asked me if I could help her with the re-design of her website. Lets see how things go from here.
