Newegg PC Upgrade Parts

Newegg PC Upgrade Parts

After last fortnight’s troubleshooting  blues, I thought I had it easy. Turns out that my Motherboard was fried along with two RAM slots and RAM sticks. Got the news today that the RAM sticks have reached the RMA dept at OCZ and all I’ve got right now is wait for the return. I’m crawling on a 1 GB RAM system right now and let me tell you, it feels like I’ve back in neanderthal times.

I had to make the hard decision to upgrade some parts of my PC over the last weekend and went off to newegg to take advantage of the paypal 15% off + holiday savings offer. Getting over the dichotomy of upgrading to an Intel core 2 quad or sticking to my aging AMD X2 was tough. In the end, I finally decided to take things slowly and upgrade just the Motherboard sticking to AMD right now. It would not have been possible to build a decent rig given my very tight budget restrictions. Here’s my holiday shopping list:

ASUS M3N78 PRO MOBO – with Hybrid SLI enabled : $ 98

EVGA 9800 GT 512 MB DDR3 GPU – not the top of the line but definitely an upgrade over my 7800GT : $114 (before a $20 Mail in Rebate)

OCZ 700w Modular PSU SLI certified (ModXstream-Pro): $114 (before a $35 mail in rebate)

Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110 : $25 (before a $10 mail in rebate).

All this for a total of $286 (after rebates). Not a bad deal at all. Considering that if I had opted for an intel platform, I’d have spent $350 just on the processor and motherboard alone.

There was a slight hitch with the free UPS shipping that newegg provided. I used paypal for the purchase and my apt number was cutoff from the shipping label (character limits). The package was not delivered on time and I had to call UPS to make the corrections. It was delivered today. I’d still give 5 stars to newegg for fast shipping – took just 2 business days.

Assembling pictures will be posted tomorrow.

Plans for next year: Get a core i7 platform with a GTX 280 in triple SLI configuration.
